Saturday 31st July 2010 - PUB CLOSED Wedding of Emma (Kevin'. . . more >> ![]() Welcome to the Bat and Ball Freehouse The Bat & Ball is a delightful free house owned and run in fine style by the experienced husband and wife team of Kevin and Sally Macready. Both have long connections with the licensed trade that go back more than 25 years. The pub is somewhat tucked away in the depths of the valley of the River Bourne at Boundstone, a mile southwest of Farnham town centre. A little tricky to find first time, perhaps, but the return visits that will certainly follow will be much easier! The pub is a great favourite with the local community and is regularly used as a meeting place for all ages to come and socialise. It also attracts plenty of walkers, being situated at a point where five public footpaths converge. The pub is believed to be at least 150 years old. It was then one of 2 buildings in the valley which in those days was dedicated to the growing of Hops for the local breweries in Farnham and Alton. The story goes that the Hop pickers used to be paid in the front room of the house and it was inevitable that it was only a matter of time before the enterprising tenant saw the opportunity to relieve the pickers of some of their hard earned cash by providing them with a brew...and so it started! In those days the beer was delivered in barrels to the bottom of a nearby road, then put into the stream of the Bourne and dragged the rest of the way by donkey power! The inside of the pub is warm and welcoming, with oak beams, wooden furniture, terracotta tiles on the floor of the main bar, a roaring log fire in the cooler months and of course cricket memorabilia including pictures, prints and even bats and balls. This is definitely a pub that serves good food rather than a restaurant that serves beer. Patrons can eat and drink throughout the pub or outside on the patio areas and garden. The pub offers a choice of six real ales at any one time. The garden has a children's bespoke play area and a lovely vine-topped pergola that backs onto the Bourne stream. |
